A systems approach to the management of arbuscular mycorrhiza Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena.

A systems approach to the management of arbuscular mycorrhiza: Bioassay and study of the impact of phosphorus supply Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena.
The aim of this study was to find out whether utilization of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), in crop production in Nordic conditions, can be promoted through management of the cropping system. P fertilization was chosen as the pilot system to manage because it has a major effect on AM and because it is problematic from the viewpoint of sustainability. Our scant knowledge of AM functioning and its effects in the field is mainly due to the methodological problems of research. Therefore, a bioassay of AM effectiviness was developed. In addition, the work demonstrated the challenge of a systems approach to research on low organizational levels of the agroecosystem. The starting point was the goal of sustainable phosphorus management in the food system, focused...

Conclusions Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena; Vesala, Kari.
There is good potential for sustainable localisation and recycling in rural food systems around the Baltic Sea. Localisation and recycling enhance sustainability in its ecological, economic and social dimensions. A sustainable way of localisation and recycling would be local recycling between farms and from the demand chain.

Evaluation of nitrogen utilization by means of the concept of primary production balance Organic Eprints
Seuri, Pentti; Kahiluoto, Helena.
Primary production balance (PPB) indicates the ratio (*) between harvested nutrients and nutrients put into crop production from outside the system (=primary nutrients). The PPB is independent of the final output (crop vs. animal products) and can be used to evaluate different systems (farms). The utilization of nitrogen (N) was evaluated by means of the PPB on nine organic farms, stockless and mixed ones, in eastern Finland. The mixed farms were able to reach a remarkably higher primary production balance (1.0 – 1.2) compared with the stockless ones (0.5). Values higher than 1.0 indicate recirculation of nutrients. Other components of the high PPB were legumes as nitrogen source and optimum livestock density.

Implications of and possible responses to climate change Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena; Rötter, Reimund.
Climate change is expected to worsen food insecurity and seriously undermines rural development prospects. It makes it harder to achieve the Millenium Development Goals and ensure a sustainable future beyond 2015. Findings from the recent 4th assessment report of IPCC, Working Group II indicate that already towards 2050 with respect to food crops yield losses between 10 and 30 % can be expected as compared to current conditions in large parts of Africa, including Western, Eastern and southern Africa. Climate change is likely to increase disparities between developed and the developing world, while many uncertainties remain. It is, for instance, estimated that developing countries would need to bear 75-80 % of the costs of damages caused by a changing...

Is there transition going on towards nutrient recycling and renewable energy in dairy farming? Organic Eprints
Kuisma, Miia; Mäkinen, Hanna; Kahiluoto, Helena.
We concluded that there are barriers of change in nutrient recycling and energy cascading in dairy farms which prevent and retard the transition towards circular economy. Any barriers appearing, including institutional barriers such as formal and informal rules and economic environment as well as barriers concerning farmer´s identity, habits, knowledge and skills were concerned.

Localisation and recycling in rural food systems - impact and solutions Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena; Granstedt, Artur; Bäckman, Stefan; Fischer, Holger; Hannula, Annamari; Kakriainen, Salla; Krumalova, Veronica; Larsson, Markus; Lehto, Tiina; Nousiainen, Marko; Pylkkänen, Päivi; Schneider, Thomas; Seppänen, Laura; Seuri, Pentti; Sumelius, John; Thomsson, Olof; Vesala, Kari; Vihma, Antto.
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of an increased share of local organic food based on local resources, especially on increased recycling (i.e. the impact of increased locality or localization), on sustainability of rural food systems around the Baltic Sea. Obstacles and solutions for sustainable localization and recycling were also identified. In addition to these main objectives, a methodological interest in developing interdisciplinary research processes was also incorporated. Case food systems in eight Baltic countries were studied on the basis of interviews and stakeholder workshops, as well as by analysis of environmental indicators and economic parameters at farm and food system level by a European multidisciplinary research group....

Material and methods Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena; Kakriainen, Salla; Granstedt, Artur; Sumelius, John.
This chapter introduces the cases and the disciplinary approaches and methods. The BERAS study had a case study approach, and this report presents the interdisciplinary synthesis of the multidisciplinary study. Ultimately, the BERAS study attempted to clarify the potential impacts of enhanced localisation and recycling rather than to compare the average status of the present local, organic food systems and organic farms with the dominant food systems and agriculture.

Results and discussion Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena; Vesala, Kari.
In this chapter, the interdisciplinary synthesis of the results of the BERAS project is presented and discussed. First, the effects of localisation and enhanced recycling on the ecological, economic and social dimensions of sustainability based on the case studies are reported, the cases where food systems and farms studied in their present state. Thereafter, the positive additional effects on sustainability obtainable by further promotion of localisation and recycling in the cases are suggested. The impact of total conversion to recycling organic agriculture is then considered. Obstacles to and solutions for localisation and recycling are identified. An finally, on the basis of these, conclusions about the sustainable way to localise and recycle are...

Social capital and entrepreneurial behaviour advancing innovativeness in interaction between small rural entrepreneurs and researchers: a phenomenographic study Organic Eprints
Iivonen, Sari; Kyrö, Paula; Mynttinen, Sinikka; Särkkä-Tirkkonen, Marjo; Kahiluoto, Helena.
Innovation processes between entrepreneurs and researchers are activated by interaction. Social capital increases the efficiency of action, for example, information dissemination by minimizing redundancy. To learn more about how to build and develop social capital assumes that we understand how entrepreneurs behave and what their expectations of interaction with researchers are. In this study we adopt a theoretical approach thet combines social capital and entrepreneurial behaviour. The firms in this study are located in the South-Savo region of Finland and operate in food production. As a result of interviews with 15 entrepreneurs a system of categories was compiled as the phenomenographic method assumes. It became obvious that the key dynamics of the...

Sustainability strategies for organic food and farming Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena.
Local organic food should be an accessible alternative, both concerning availability and price, for a citizen-consumer influencing through food choices, and for the rural poor. This sets a challenge to the politicians, as also addressed in the European Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming. Its is based on two pillars - consumer markets and public goods, and conclusively on two payers. The society pays through allocation of subsidizes and taxes as well as through legislation, which regulate the price relations. The economic interventions by society increase the equity and access to food in comparison to a price premium.

Sustainable rural development with emphasis on agriculture and food security within the climate change setting : SARD-climate final report Organic Eprints
Sumelius, John; Bäckman, Stefan; Kahiluoto, Helena; Rötter, Reimund.
Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development (SARD) is considered an essential step toward achieving the first Millenium Development Goal (MDG) of eradicating extreme hunger and poverty. In order to achieve this important goal, first it is important to find ways of increasing the incomes of the rural poor, who mostly depend on upon agriculture for their livelihoods. This means improving development, cooperation, trade and agricultural policy to improve agriculture's contribution to economic development and poverty reduction. Current projects estimate that 1.02 billion people will go hungry in 2009 alone; an indication that if efforts are not directed at reversing this trend it would most likely continue. The research on climate change effect on...

Utilization of arbuscular mycorrhiza by system management Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, Helena; Vestberg, Mauritz.
Mycorrhiza is an ecosystem service which can be relied on and favoured, but also impaired or irreversibly lost depending on the production system. Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) deserves to be considered in development of sustainable farming systems as well as in breeding and soil quality assessment programmes serving sustainable agriculture. AM effectiveness in field soils can be assessed using a standardized bioassay.
